Abogada Melissa Nepomiachi
Attorney Melissa Nepomiachi joins the firm after four years vigorously defending our community’s most vulnerable members at the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s Office. As the only bilingual attorney in that office, Attorney Nepomiachi focused on providing representation to Spanish-speaking clients, who experienced unique challenges navigating the criminal justice system. She has significant experience assessing the immigration consequences of criminal convictions, and served in the Wisconsin Public Defender's Immigration Practice Group, advising clients, colleagues, and other community attorneys regarding immigration matters.
As the daughter of Argentine immigrants, Attorney Nepomiachi experienced firsthand the immigration journey of her own family, including the difficulties of navigating a different culture and legal system. This experience inspired her to work with immigrant communities, something she has done in different context ever since. Attorney Nepomiachi graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Latin American Studies. She spent a year abroad in Nicaragua, Cuba, and Brazil with the School for International Training. She later worked as a liaison and advocate for a local politician in New York City, gaining significant experience in the social, economic and legal issues that affect diverse, low-income and immigrant communities. Her experiences convinced her that working within the legal system would be the best way to create greater social inclusion and increased access to justice.
Attorney Nepomiachi obtained her J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2011, with a special focus on criminal law. During law school, she participated in both immigration and criminal-defense focused clinical programs. Her work in the Frank J. Remington Center, working on appeals and other postconviction relief and services for incarcerated individuals, won her recognition as Outstanding Clinical Student of the Year.
As a public defender, Melissa has maintained a large and diverse caseload. She brings extensive courtroom experience to the firm, as well as excellent research, writing, and problem-solving skills. Melissa recognizes that her client’s lives are much more complicated than any penal or immigration system is capable of addressing. Melissa prides herself on providing effective, quality, and compassionate representation during a time that is often enormously stressful for both the individual and his or her family. She is excited to expand this commitment to include helping families stick together by assisting them with their immigration case needs.
Melissa will be handing immigration cases before USCIS and the Immigration Court, as well as representing individuals in criminal cases in the Greater Milwaukee area.
